Walk 'n Rollers, a local non-profit focused on Safe Routes to School and Active Transportation has awarded Meghan Sahli-Wells with their first annual Golden Sneaker Award.

This award recognizes outstanding achievements by individuals who have committed to positive change in the area of active transportation.

Ms. Sahli-Wells has over a decade of community involvement in the area of active transportation including serving on Culver City's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, co-founding the Culver City Bicycle Coalition (now Bike Culver City) and serving on Culver City's City Council for over eight years and holding the office of Mayor twice.

"There are few individuals who wholeheartedly and enthusiastically support active transportation and fewer still that embrace Safe Routes to School programs as much as Meghan," states Jim Shanman, Walk 'n Rollers Executive Director and Culver City Safe Routes to School Coordinator. "Her support extends far beyond council chambers. She really walks the walk. It is our honor to have Ms. Sahli-Wells as our inaugural recipient."

Maybe rides the ride is more appropriate, as Ms. Sahli-Wells is known as the biking mayor and can be seen pedaling her way throughout her home town.

"I'm thrilled to be the very first recipient of the Golden Sneaker Award! Walk 'n Rollers has made such a positive impact on the students of Culver City, bringing them healthy, happy transportation habits that will last a lifetime. It warms my heart to see the success of this organization grow in Culver City. It's an honor to be recognized by them."

Additionally, Ms. Sahli-Wells has represented Culver City on a regional level having filled seats on the Expo Board during construction of the Expo Line and at the Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG). Ms. Sahli-Wells has been instrumental in bringing a sustainability mindset to all her positions and highlighting active transportation every step of the way, culminating with the approval of a soon-to-be realized bike share program in Culver City.

Walk 'n Rollers works throughout Southern California on Safe Routes to School programs of all sizes. They are currently in the midst of their eighth year of working in Culver City and have overseen the Safe routes to School program there as it has grown from a single fledgling program at Linwood E. Howe Elementary school – where Ms. Sahli-Wells was a Safe Routes to School Parent Champion – to involvement with all CCUSD schools.
