    Carole Bell|Feb 2, 2017

Smart And Spicy "I try to have fun," he told me, when I asked about the cowboy hat and the train whistles. I'd watched Guido Lamell, Music Director/ Conductor of the Santa Monica Symphony, wearing a Stetson while conducting Rodeo. I'd laughed as he blew a train whistle for comic effect during a concert. It's a box office bonanza at the movies this weekend with not just an eclectic slate of new releases, but award-worthy films, among them the film is without a doubt the best picture of the year. Outstanding is a documentary from Otto Bell which tells the story of Aisholpan, a young Mongolian girl who follows her dream and breaks the centuries-old glass ceiling of her culture, soaring as THE EAGLE HUNTRESS. Don't be surprised to see this on the Oscar short list for Best Documentary Feature this...

  • A New NFL Business Model?

    George Laase|Feb 2, 2017

For the next two seasons the LA Chargers will be playing in their temporary home in Carson while the Rams' new stadium is being built in Inglewood. This is not just a short-sighted remedy. The NFL owners will be watching closely how the 30,000 seat StubHub stadium is run. If the Chargers' organization can make a nice profit out of this smaller "pocket-sized stadium," this may intrigue the NFL to re-think its idea that every new stadium it builds has to cost billions of dollars. Pro football is...

  • Twenty Things Non-Swimmers Should Know About Us

    Alan Tapley|Feb 2, 2017

Editor’s note: Alan Tapley is the parent of two female swimmers, ages 12 and 14. Over the past eight years he has been with them at hundreds of meets and practices. He has had countless conversations with swimmers about what they would like the public to know about their pursuit of this grueling sport. 1) Yes, we want to go to the Olympics someday. Yes, we know that the odds are a million to one. But swimmers are goal oriented. 2) At big meets we wear a special suit called a technical suit that is five sizes too small, cost over $300, and l...
