A message from: Dr. Brian Lucas, CCUSD Superintendent

In a statement addressed to the CCUSD community, School Superintendent Brian Lucas offered "We mourn the lives lost and the lives forever affected by yesterday's events at Apalachee high school in Georgia. While this shooting took place in another state far away from us, we can't help but also be affected by the devastating toll it takes on everyone, particularly on families with school-aged children.

"We'd like to remind you that in May 2024, the Culver City Unified Board of Education unanimously approved Resolution No.40/2023-2024, gun Violence Prevention. Guns continue to be the leading cause of death for children in America. This resolution serves as a declaration of the Culver City Unified School District's commitment to keep students safe from gun violence and to help prevent gun violence in our schools, homes, and communities.

"It pains me to send this message after yet another school shooting. While our school year is just getting started, we will continue with periodic lockdown drills and active-shooter trainings throughout the year.

"Practices and drills are essential, of course. Relationships and communication are even better for preventing issues. Therefore, we'd also like to remind you and your children that if you see or feel something that's unsettling, say something to a teacher, an administrator or another trusted adult. Submitting a tip and/or seeking help are great first steps in making our schools and communities safer while helping someone in need. Our schools are full of caring adults who are ready to listen and take action.
