The Culver City High School girls track and field team capped off a magnificent 2023 season last weekend when they placed second overall at the 103rd CIF California high school State Meet. The meet was held at Buchanan high school in Clovis near Fresno. The two-day meet showcased the best track and field athletes not only in the state but also in the nation.
The Lady Centaurs scored 31 points behind Long Beach Wilson's 44. Leading the way for the Culver City was sophomore Joelle Trepagnier who won the 200 meters in 23.62 seconds and placed second in the 400 meters in 53.55 seconds. She also ran a blistering 52.10 anchor leg on the winning 4X400 meter relay team.
Also helping the Centaurs was junior Morgan Maddox who placed sixth in the 400 meters in a time of 55.67 and she ran on the winning 400-meter relay. Senior Imaan Minwalla and freshman Leena Powell were the other runners on the 4X400 winning relay time that ran an outstanding time of 3:41.08.
"It was a great ending to a spectacular season," said track coach Jahmal Wright. "The teams (boys and girls) as a whole put in so much hard work and to see it all materialize and to see our girls represent Culver City high and the Culver community on the biggest stage in California. It was very rewarding as a coach. Coach Demus (LaShinda) and I are very proud of all of our track athletes and especially the girls who competed in the State meet. A lot of the athletes are returning so the future looks bright." Demus is the girls' head coach.
