Due to some recent incidents on some of our campuses, particularly incidents targeting

our LGBTQIA students, I felt it was important to re-emphasize our commitment to foster

respect and understanding of one another, of who we are individually and collectively

as members of our community.

We are committed to providing all staff and students with teaching and learning

environments that are safe and welcoming for all. Student learning is optimized when

they feel safe to engage and are comfortable to be themselves, to be at their best.

To preserve and maintain this critical standard across all campuses, we must work

together. I want to reassure this community that when we are made aware of any

situation where the safety, physical well-being and/or psychological well-being of an

individual has been compromised, we act with conviction. We take all reports seriously

and we are committed to swift and appropriate action. Our first priority after any

occurrence is to attend to the student's well-being, get in touch directly with the families

who are involved or impacted, and to launch an investigation and take disciplinary

action as warranted.

I am asking all parents and caregivers to be our partners in this effort and to remind

your student(s) that if they ever feel unsafe or if they witness or hear of behaviors that

make someone feel unsafe, we urge them to please come forward. There are many

ways to report incidents. Students can reach out to a trusted adult at home or on

campus, including a teacher, counselor or site administrator. Additionally, anyone can

report behaviors and incidents using the WeTip( https://www.wetip.com/) anonymous reporting system.

Please know that if a safety concern arises on campus, we act quickly to address the

situation with the students involved and we notify their parents/caregivers. We do not

necessarily issue a message more broadly to our school community, as we work to

address the situation promptly, properly and within the legal parameters that strictly

protect student privacy rights.

I appreciate your thoughtful consideration that social media is no place to discuss

children and behavior issues, so if ever you have a concern or question, please contact

the school administrator or our district office.

To reemphasize, the safety and well-being of every individual on our campuses is of

paramount importance to this District. We are here and we want to help. Honoring and

supporting diversity among our students, faculty and staff is a pillar of CCUSD's

mission, as we all recommit to guiding every member of the CCUSD family to develop

respect for all persons as equals regardless of ethnicity, nationality, gender identity,

sexual orientation, and religious beliefs.
