Howard Mitchell Passes
June 1, 2023
Howard Mitchell, a former long-time Culver City resident, passed away at his Palm Desert, CA home on April 23, 2023. He was 93. Mitch, as he was known to almost everyone, was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Charline, in 2007. Charline taught for many years in the Culver City Unified School District, first as an elementary school teacher and later at the Independent Learning Center. Mitch is survived by sons, Chuck (Angela), Andy (Sandra) and Doug (Sharon); grandchildren, Valerie (Steve), James (Isabel), Trevor (Megan), Megan (Ryan), Ryan and Robbie; and two great-grandchildren.
Mitch was an only child born to Edwin and Frances Mitchell in Alhambra, CA on August 6, 1929. The family moved to the Fairfax District of Los Angeles in 1932. He attended Fairfax high school and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and worked for the California Division of Forestry during college summer breaks. He later served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and then enjoyed a long career with California Hardware Co.
Having a natural inclination to help others, Mitch was active in numerous service organizations, including the Culver Y's Men Club and Sunrise Optimist Club of Santa Monica, while also managing to be involved with his sons' activities while they were growing up, and later with their families. After retiring and moving to Palm Desert, he and Charline enjoyed many trips in the U.S. and abroad as well as twice yearly trips to Mazatlán, Mexico. His other interests included reading, fishing, spending time at a family cabin near Lake Tahoe, and simply being with family and friends.
