The Actors' Gang: a show created and performed by an ensemble comprised entirely of Prison Project Alumni

February 23, 2023

The Actors’ Gang’s energetic and emotionally compelling way of making theater has been pulsing through the California Correctional system since 2006. The work started by our Prison Project teaching artists is being boldly reimagined and carried forward by men and women wearing state-issued blues.

With over 240 years of combined incarceration, an ensemble of Prison Project alumni have found their way to freedom and want to share their stories with you. To do so, they have created an entirely new piece of theater and are bringing it to The Actors' Gang stage.

(IM)MIGRANTS OF THE STATE is the raw journey of fourteen Californians navigating life before, during, and after incarceration.

This project is made possible by support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation is the nation’s largest supporter of the arts and humanities. Since 1969, the Foundation has been guided by its core belief that the humanities and arts are essential to human understanding. The Foundation believes that the arts and humanities are where we express our complex humanity, and that everyone deserves the beauty, transcendence, and freedom that can be found there. Through our grants, we seek to build just communities enriched by meaning and empowered by critical thinking, where ideas and imagination can thrive

These dedicated artists have been working together for over a year to craft a play that tells their stories--before, during, and after incarceration.

(Im)migrants of the State is a deeply personal, intensely honest, and profoundly hopeful story of overcoming life's obstacles in pursuit of redemption.

Beginning March 15th, join us for a unique piece of theater magic that celebrates the triumph of the human spirit.
