LA Student Organizes Reusable Water Bottle Drive for Local Homeless Shelter

Ruby Santamaria set up donation boxes at her school and got approval for students to receive extra credit for donating for her fellowship project. This motivated many of her peers and her community donated 60 pounds of reusable water bottles to the Los Angeles Mission.

The fellowship, offered free of charge in a collaboration between the Rustic Pathways Foundation and Stanford University's Deliberative Democracy Lab, challenged students like Ruby to design a project customized to their community’s needs and then join in online sessions with other participants to share ideas.

“Participating allowed me to feel that I could make a difference in a community as large as Los Angeles,” says Ruby. “Because our city is especially affected by climate change due to its large and unsustainable nature, it was really empowering to know that I was able to organize a drive on such a large scale. I’m proud of how much we were able to donate and I’m really happy with the outcome.”

Much more information on Ruby's impact work for a community story can be found highlighted in our blog article:

The fourth cycle of the free Climate Leaders Fellowship program will be from March 1 to April 30, 2023. high school students can join the next cycle here:
