The new City Council didn't waste time stirring controversy in its first meeting.

Less than an hour after swearing in new members, the Council voted 3-2 to repeal an ordinance for a $25 minimum wage for health care workers that was passed earlier in Monday's night meeting.

Councilmember Goran Eriksson who supported the ordinance earlier in the evening asked if the Council could reconsider the issue.

City Attorney Heather Baker replied that the Council could do so with a majority vote since it was still part of the same meeting.

Eriksson along with Mayor Albert Vera and new Councilmember Dan O'Brien voted to revisit and ultimately repeal the minimum wage ordinance.

Vera contended that the city should not get involved in "management versus labor union" matters while O'Brien said the city should not set wages for a specific industry.

Vice Mayor Yasmine Imani McMorrin said it was "disheartening" to start the new Council with this action and for abandoning the front-line workers.

Eriksson did not elaborate why he had a change of heart regarding the issue.
