CCPD to Beef Up DUI Patrols for July 4 Holiday

Culver City Police Department will have additional officers on patrol looking for drivers suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs during the July 4 holiday weekend.

“If you plan on drinking this weekend, plan on a safe and sober ride home,” Culver City Assistant Police Chief Jason Sims said. “Think of your loved ones, friends, and family before thinking about driving after you’ve had a few drinks.”

In 2020, nearly 500 people were killed in crashes throughout the country during the Fourth of July weekend and 41% of those deadly crashes involved alcohol, said CCPD.

According to AAA, more than five million Californians will travel over the 4th of July holiday. With most traveling by car, travelers should allow extra time to get to their destination, said police.

“If you are hosting friends and family for barbecues and watching fireworks shows, offer nonalcoholic drinks for designated sober drivers and monitor who is drinking,” said police. “If you see people leaving after drinking alcoholic beverages, offer to have them stay the night or make arrangements for a ride home with a sober driver.”

CCPD also reminds drivers that prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications and marijuana may impair driving. “Do your research and be informed about how certain drugs may affect your driving ability before you drive,” said police.

If you see someone who appears impaired or driving recklessly, call 9-1-1.

Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
