People say you should save your best for the last performance. That’s just what the Culver City girls track team did when they competed against some of the top track and field athletes in the nation at the California State track and field finals last week in Clovis, California at Buchanan high school. Every year the track and field eyes are on this meet because the student athletes produce some of the best times and marks in the world.

“It was an awesome experience to see our girls track team compete and run at a high level on the biggest stage of the season,” said coach Jahmal Wright. “I was definitely a proud coach last weekend. They are very competitive when they need to be and that’s a testament to their make up as elite athletes. The ladies are ready to shine when they are needed the most. It’s the pedigree of the individual athlete.”

The girls 4X400 meter relay placed third and set another school record. The team of Kennady Iverson, Joelle Trepagnier, Savanna Mullins and Morgan Maddox was clocked at 3:48.68. The 4x100 relay team placed sixth with a time of 47.38. Runners on that team were Imaan Minwalla, Andrea Smith, Trepagnier and Maddox. Maddox placed sixth in the 400 meters with a time of 55.85 and Trepagnier was seventh in the 400 meters at 56.03.

All six Centaur girls will go into the record books as track stars but the 4X400 relay team broke their school record fours times this season. “We ran our fastest time of the season, and all of the ladies ran their best individual times in the relay at the State Finals,” said Wright. “The other teams were at their best too so our girls had to dig down deep to find that next level of competitiveness.”

This is what Wright had to say about the 4x400 relay runners. “Kennady ran a great first leg. Joelle did a great job of keeping us in the mix and moving us up a couple of spots. Savanna (Mullins) did a great job just holding on to our position and Morgan ran an awesome anchor leg and moved us up to third. I am definitely proud of all of the ladies for stepping up on the biggest stage. Hard work and dedication paid off for these girls.”

What will they do for encore next season? Five of the six girls will return next season so “C” house will be back on the track setting records again. “The eyes will be on them because we have a young team,” said Wright. “What you are going to see is a bigger and stronger team next year. The sky’s the limit. These girls deserve all the credit. The moment is never too big for them.”
