Culver City Vice Mayor Daniel Lee has entered the race for the congressional seat currently held Karen Bass who recently announced she is running for Mayor of Los Angeles next year.

It marks the second time this year that Lee is seeking higher office. In March, he came in a distant second in a special election to fill the vacant 30th Senate District seat, previously held by current County Supervisor Holly Mitchell. The Senate seat winner, Sydney Kamlager (D-Los Angeles), garnered 68% of the votes in the seven-candidate field.

"The constituents of the 37th District have had responsive and effective elected leadership in Representative Karen Bass, and as I have demonstrated in my time on the Culver City Council, I will continue to make the work of the people my priority," said Lee, announcing his congressional campaign with a close group of supporters last week.

In his press release, Lee touted his tenure on the Culver City Council, mentioning "he led the way for Culver City to pass rent control, close down the Inglewood Oil Field, pass "Hero Pay" for grocery and hospital workers and implement numerous other people-focused policies."

Lee also promised he will be advocating for a single payer healthcare plan in California. "I do not believe we should be rationing healthcare, we need Medicare for All now, when I'm in congress I will not just be a supporter," he said. "I will fight to make sure that we pass and implement Medicare for All and that vision, hearing and dental are part of the deal."

Lee's priorities include "policies like the Green New Deal. getting money out of politics by amending the constitution, ending qualified immunity and implementing a Universal Basic Income."

"Our goal is to run a campaign worthy of representing the 37th District and all Californians regardless of where the final district borders are drawn," he said.
