Culver City Theatre in the Park

October 28, 2021

A great Culver City tradition finally returns! Free theatre in the park is back! Culver City Public Theatre celebrates the return of live shows for the entire family by putting goblins and video games onstage and making the audience tell the actors what happens next!

Culver City Public Theatre's annual outdoor production is back, rich with the comedy and excitement synonymous with its Carlson Park productions that have entertained families for so many years.

The show is the west coast premiere of "Zombie Thoughts," a choose-your-own-adventure style story of two video game avatars, one shy and anxious, the other goofy and distracted. One avatar teams with the audience for an interactive quest to help shy and nervous Sam defeat the game's monsters and win the game.

"Zombie Thoughts" is written by Oliver Kokai-Means and Jennifer A. Kokai, a Utah-based playwright, who teaches at Weber State University. Directing the show is Culver City Public Theatre Vice President Sophie Bell. CCPT vet Scott Hillegas assists Bell. Cast includes Jules M. Patrick, Keegan Vernon-Clay and Matt Kim.

"I love that the show speaks to children directly," says Bell, "about mental health and promoting healthy conversation. It's a subject that can be scary and isn't often talked about with kids that don't have these types of issues, so I think it's great that it not only shows something some of the kids may not have seen before, but also gives examples of how to stay calm in scary situations, and has themes of self-acceptance."
