The Culver City Council this week started a discussion on whether or not it would require patrons and staff at local food establishments, health and fitness facilities and personal businesses to show proof of a full Covid-19 vaccination.

At its Monday night's meeting, the Council also discussed vaccination requirement for city officials as well as participants in recreational sports in Culver City.

After a public hearing – featuring many speakers who blasted the vaccination mandate as "an infringement of freedom" -- the councilmembers directed staff to draft an ordinance similar to Los Angeles' recently-passed measure.

Although some expressed that enforcement of the proposed mandate "is very worrisome," most Councilmembers stated that it is imperative that the city takes a stand on this issue.

"It's important to say we believe in vaccines," said Councilmember Yasmine-Imani McMorrin.

Two weeks ago, Los Angeles City Council voted to require patrons at indoor spaces such as restaurants, gyms and movie theaters to show proof of full Covid-19 vaccination -- starting November 4.

The ordinance will also apply to personal care establishments such as spas and hair salons, as well as city buildings.

Under the new LA law, individuals with medical or religious exemptions must provide a form declaring that. People who do not meet those requirements can use the outdoor spaces of a business and will be allowed in the covered spaces to use restrooms or pick up takeout orders.

The council vote followed a countywide proof of vaccination requirement that took effect last week. The county policy states that proof of at least one vaccine dose will be required to both enter or work at indoor parts of bars, nightclubs, breweries and lounges across Los Angeles County.
