LA Teachers Unions Wants Mandatory Vax for Kids

A Los Angeles teachers union wants more stringent coronavirus guidelines for the nation’s second-largest school district.

The Los Angeles Times reports, United Teachers Los Angeles (UTLA) “is calling for mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations for all eligible students and stricter quarantine rules while raising some objections to a new district mandate for online instruction when students are in quarantine.”

The Times obtained a document dated August 26 called “Counterproposal #2” that the outlet says was “submitted at the bargaining table.” It reportedly requests that students who have not been granted religious or medical exemptions “achieve full vaccination no later than 12 weeks following the birthday in which they become eligible” for the shots.

According to the outlet, “The union also is calling for entire classes of younger students to be quarantined when anyone in that class – staff or student – tests positive for a coronavirus infection.” However, The Times noted, “There is no indication that the district has agreed to either proposal.”

High Surf Warning

Entering the ocean could be dangerous this Menorial Day weekend due to a strong swell that’ll continue through Monday night while causing rip currents.

A “beach hazards statement” issued by the National Weather Service will be in effect until 11 p.m. Monday for LA County and through 10 p.m. in Orange County.

“A moderate, long-period south swell will bring elevated surf and large breaking waves to coastal areas through Monday evening,” according to the NWS.

“Surf will average 5 to 8 feet on the Central Coast and 3 to 6 feet with local sets to 7 feet across Ventura and Los Angeles counties, including Catalina Island. Surf will be highest on exposed south-facing beaches.”

In Orange County, waves 4 to 6 feet were expected Friday, with local sets up to 8 feet. Surf on Saturday is expected to range from 4 to 6 feet. Southwest-facing beaches will experience the highest surf.

Forecasters warned swimmers of dangerous rip currents, which “can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea.”

The NWS also warned of large breaking waves that could knock people off rocks and jetties.

Arson Suspect Sentenced

9/2/21:A West Hills man accused of starting a fire that caused substantial damage to a Santa Monica sushi restaurant during a night of civil unrest last year is expected to plead guilty Thursday to a federal charge.

Micah Tillmon, 20, has agreed to enter his plea to a charge of possession of an unregistered destructive device, in particular an incendiary device. The charge carries a sentence of up to 10 years in federal prison, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Tillmon will be ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $500,000 when he is sentenced, court papers show.

The defendant is also facing multiple looting and commercial burglary charges in a complaint filed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. However, the federal case is proceeding first.

Tillmon allegedly used a homemade incendiary device to set fire to the Sake House at the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Fourth Street on May 31, 2020, during a night of apparently organized looting blocks from a protest meant to decry the in-custody death of George Floyd in Minneapolis a week earlier.

According to documents filed in Los Angeles federal court, security video from the restaurant shows Tillmon removing “a red tube-shaped object from his jacket, which he placed behind the reception desk area of the restaurant before walking away. Within seconds of that action, smoke and fire appeared from the area.”

Investigators with the Santa Monica Fire Department determined that the fire was caused by the object Tillmon allegedly placed in the restaurant. He was identified by Santa Monica police detectives, who reviewed numerous security videos and social media posts.

Tillmon was also linked to the fire when investigators uncovered a video showing his white Ford Explorer parking next to the Sake House four minutes before the fire started and then reversing across the street soon after the blaze began, according to an affidavit.

That same video allegedly shows the Explorer parking about 500 feet away from the Sake House, and Tillmon exiting the vehicle and looting a nearby business, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
