A machete-wielding man was talked off a construction scaffolding in Culver City on Friday morning after a three-hour standoff with police and its crisis team, local authorities said.

Culver City police were called at 11:45 p.m. Thursday to the 700 block of Wrightcrest Drive in Blair Hills, where a resident reported a man with a machete on his roof. The homeowner went onto the roof to confront the suspect and "was violently threatened with the machete," according to Culver City Police Department press release.

When the officers arrived, the suspect had moved to a second-story scaffolding at a neighboring residence under construction, police said.

Neighboring law enforcement agencies assisted with establishing a perimeter around the residence. Nearby residents were evacuated and a Culver City police drone was launched to monitor the situation, local authorities said.

For several hours, police officers asked the man to come down on the ground, aided by announcements from a Los Angeles Police Department helicopter hovering overhead, but the man wouldn't budge, authorities said.

"The subject continued to ignore officer's requests and continued to yell obscenities at officers, while still armed with the machete," CCPD said.

At 3 a.m., an officer from Culver City Police's Crisis Negotiation and Emergency Response Teams arrived at the scene and eventually convinced the person to surrender.

The officer was "able to build a rapport with the subject and de-escalate the situation," said police. "The Crisis Negotiation Team was ultimately able to convince the subject to put the machete down and climb down from the scaffolding and surrender."

The man, who was not identified, was arrested for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. No injuries were reported during the incident.
