21 year old with a gun arrested

5/2: Santa Monica Police Department Officers were dispatched to the 200 block of Bay Street to investigate an assault with a gun.

When officers arrived on scene at 1:30 AM, they met with two women standing outside a liquor store. They that Blake Josephs Sheets, 21, accompanied by four other males, approached and attempted to speak to them about their vehicle. The victims refused the man's advance and asked to be left alone, police said.

After a short argument, the Sheets went to a black BMW with Texas plates parked nearby and retrieved a handgun. He returned to the victims and pointed the handgun directly at them. The suspect then joined up with his friends and fled in a separate vehicle.

Officers located the vehicle a short distance away. The subjects in the vehicle were detained and the victims identified Sheets as the person who pointed the gun at them. Officers then located a loaded firearm in the black BMW that was parked where the incident occurred. Sheets was arrested and booked for Assault with a Deadly Weapon –Firearm. The four other individuals were interviewed and released, said Lt. Rudy Flores, Santa Monica PD PIO.

Trespasser Arrested With Loaded gun and 97 Grams of Meth

On Tuesday, May 4, police were called to respond to a call to remove a trespasser from a carport in the 1400 block of 16th Street.

They arrived, together with a Mental Health Clinician from the LA County Department of Public Health found Javier Alvarez, the alleged trespasser. They searched his belongings and found a large cache of methamphetamine (97 grams), and an unmarked and unregistered loaded handgun.

Santa Monica Police chose in this case to ignore directives from the LA County District Attorney's office and the model for nonviolent response proposed by the LA City Council. The county's district attorney has vowed not to prosecute trespassing violations.

Alvarez was booked into the Santa Monica Jail for Possession of an unregistered, concealed Firearm, and Possession of Methamphetamine, Santa Monica Police said

SMC Bond Oversight Committee

Santa Monica College is seeking applications for the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee, which oversees the implementation of the bond measures that are funding capital improvement projects at the college: Measure S (2004), Measure AA (2008), and Measure V (2016).

The application deadline is Friday, May 24, 2021.
