Individuals have 30 business days to request local elections officials to remove names from recall.

"This now triggers the next phase of the recall process, a 30-business-day period in which voters may submit written requests to county Registrars of Voters to remove their names from the recall petition," Secretary Weber said. "A recall election will be held unless a sufficient number of signatures are withdrawn."

Pursuant to Elections Code section 11108(b), any voter who has signed the recall petition may provide a written request to their county elections official to have their signature removed from the petition between today, April 26, 2021, and June 8.


Supporters of the recall have collected enough signatures enough valid signatures to trigger a state-wide recall.

A campaign for a recall vote by a conservative group grew popular amid criticism of Newsom's handling of the pandemic.

The campaign to remove Newsom has come into sharp focus in recent months as critics have expressed frustration at the state's Covid-19 vaccine rollout, among other matters.

Voters would be asked two questions: First, should Newsom be removed? The second question would be a list of replacement candidates from which to choose. Provided a majority votes yes on the recall, the candidate who gets the most votes becomes governor. With dozens of candidates expected, it's very likely a winner will get less than 50% of the votes.

Former Olympic decathlete and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner officially announced her bid for governor of California. As a Democrat Kounalakis is not expected to enter the race.


In 2003, Democratic Governor Gray Davis was subject to a recall election, which he lost to Arnold Schwarzenegger.
