The defenseman works hard for the team

Rob Blake, Los Angeles Kings Vice President and General Manager, made an announcement that they signed defenseman Matt Roy to a three-year contract extension with an average annual value of $3,150,000. A nice raise from the league minimum of $700,000. Blake liked what Roy has contributed to the team.

Roy, a 6'1", 200-pound native of Detroit, Michigan, was selected in the seventh round (194th overall) by the Kings during the 2015 NHL Draft. That came after his first season at Michigan Tech where he had nine assists in 36 games and was third among NCAA freshman with a plus-21 rating. He then played two more seasons with the Huskies totaling 55 points (12-42=55) and helped lead them to two NCAA tournaments, and would get the nod to participate on the WCHA Second All-Star team in 2016 and First All-Star team in 2017.

Roy made his professional debut with the Ontario Reign (AHL), the Kings farm team, during the 2016-17 season. Over three seasons with the Reign, he appeared in 102 games and registered 47 points (12-35=47). The 26-year-old began the 2018-19 season with the Reign but earned a call-up on February 16, 2019 and made his NHL debut against the Boston Bruins that same day. His first NHL point, an assist, came a month later against the Nashville Predators, and he scored his first goal one week later against the San Jose Sharks.

Since the start of the 2018-19 season, Roy leads all Kings in plus/minus and his 18;08 TOI/GP during that span ranks eighth among Kings defensemen. He had his first NHL multi-point game with two assists against the New York Rangers, when he became a Kings roster regular the next season, finishing with 18 points (4-14=18) in 70 games.

Roy has played in 24 games so far this season, posting seven points (0-7=7) and a plus-2 rating, ranking third among defensemen and fifth on the team overall in TOI/GP (19:16).

Matt Roy

He's a hit and block workhorse and never takes a shift off, knowing how to play with and without the puck.

Kudos to Roy for successfully navigating through the rebuild to secure a spot on the Kings team.
