Recall Campaign Gets 1.5 Million Signatures

February 18, 2021

The campaign to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom has obtained the 1.5 million signatures necessary to place the measure on the November 2021 ballot, announced the Recall Newsom campaign.

Recall proponents cite homelessness, closings and dislocations associated with the pandemic, the EDD in prison scandal, and the “French Laundry” restaurant affair.

President Biden has recently spoken against the campaign. Presidential spokesman Jen Psaki has said that the recall threatens to interrupt a “career arc that could lead to the White House,” for Newsom, once a Democratic star.

The signatures must still be verified. In a recall election, the first question is “Should Gov. Gavin Newsom be recalled?” The second question for voters is, who should replace him as governor?

Republicans including former gubernatorial candidate John Cox and Kevin Falcouner, a former San Diego mayor, have announced that they will run. Democrats have been more reluctant to jump in and challenge Newsom.
