With Holly Mitchell winning a seat on the powerful the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, the race for her current post in the State Senate has begun.

Mitchell, who handily defeated former LA City Council President Herb Wesson on Tuesday, will assume her new post on November 30. She will succeed Mark Ridley-Thomas who won a seat on Los Angeles City Council, vacated by Wesson due to term limits.

According to state laws, Governor Gavin Newson has until December 14 to call for a special election to fill her senate seat for the next years. The special election will likely be held in the first quarter of 2021.

Mitchell currently represents California's 30th State Senate district, which includes Culver City, Inglewood, Cheviot Hills, the Crenshaw District, downtown LA and Ladera Heights. Her term ends in November 2022.

Political observers believe that Assembly member Sydney Kamlager who won re-election for the 54th district on Tuesday will be contending for Mitchell's seat.

Another contender is Cooper Hefner, son of the late Playboy founder. This past July he announced that he formed an exploratory campaign to run as a Democrat for her State Senate seat if she were elected to the Board of Supervisors.

Mitchell, who has not publicly supported any successor, began her tenure on State Senate after winning a special election in 2013 to fill the post vacated by Curren Price following his election to the LA City Council.
