August 27, 2020

Santa Monicans for Democracy addressed the Santa Monica City Council Tuesday, asking that they reduce funding for the police.

The Santa Monica Defunding the Police Committee (SMDPC) presented the Council with 41 pages of recommendations, including legislation to defund Santa Monica Police and further budget cuts.

The recommendations include banning choke holds, and means of transport that could restrict a suspects breathing. They suggest eliminating use of pepper spray and tear gas for controlling crowds. They would also ban military vehicles and militarized police responses.

They propose intervention specialists” rather than police, and would fund these social workers with funds cut from the Police department.
