The Los Angeles Chargers have officially announced the addition of Quarterbacks Coach Pep Hamilton to Head Coach Anthony Lynn's coaching staff for the upcoming 2020 season. Hamilton brings eleven years of NFL coaching experience with five different NFL teams, most recently with the Cleveland Browns in 2016. Hamilton has been a quarterback coach for four NFL teams.

The 45-year-old Hamilton spent the 2017-2018 seasons at Michigan as the Assistant head coach/passing game coordinator under head coach Jim Harbaugh. Hamilton had previously coached under Harbaugh at Stanford in the 2010 season and played quarterback at Howard University for three seasons, earning the team's scholar-athlete award in 1995 and 1996.

Hamilton was the quarterback coach in 2011 for Andrew Luck's final year at Stanford. Luck finished second in Heisman Trophy voting and won Pacific-12 Offensive Player of the Year honors. He was also Luck's offensive coordinator with the Indianapolis Colts from 2013 to 2015.

Under Hamilton's guidance, the Colts led the NFL in passing in 2014, won two division titles and three playoffs games. In a press conference upon his hiring in Cleveland in 2016, Hamilton was asked about the qualities he likes to see in a quarterback. He listed the following the qualities: "Accuracy, is he a winner and, of course, leadership qualities are really important."

As to the development of young quarterbacks, Hamilton stated that, "Whoever it is we have at quarterback, be it a veteran quarterback or a young quarterback if we draft a quarterback - you have to have a plan that's specific for that quarterback." The challenge for Hamilton with the Chargers will be to develop a plan for each quarterback while determining which quarterback can lead a talented offensive team back to the playoffs.
