Wesson, Mitchell Face Runoff

Measure CC, Culver City Sales Tax Increase, to Remain in Place

In the hotly-contested Second District Supervisor race, Los Angeles City Councilman Herb Wesson will face State Senator Holly Mitchell in a runoff at the general election on November 3. Neither candidate garnered over 50% of the votes to avoid a runoff.

Locally, Culver City Measure CC, which extends by 10 years the sales tax increase approved by the voters in 2012, passed with a whopping 75.03 percent voting yes and 24.9 percent rejecting the extension. With its passage, the sales tax will be extended until 2031. The tax generates $9.8 million for the city's general fund each year.

Congresswoman Karen Bass was easily reelected to her seat with 88.82% of the vote and Assemblywoman Sydney Kamlager-Dove won her contest, capturing 55.20% of the votes.

It should be noted that with the volume of mail-in ballots, there are large percentage of votes yet to be counted. However, none of the races are close enough for the uncounted ballots to make a difference.

The supervisor's race to replace Mark Ridley-Thomas featured three high profile candidates with Wesson, Mitchell and former Los Angeles City Councilwoman Jan Perry.

Culver City plans another tax measure on the November ballot. This time it would be a tax increase of 1/4% on the sales tax. That would raise the sales tax to the state maximum.
