In an exciting game that never seemed to end, the Culver City Centaurs held on for a 32-27 win over the Lawndale Cardinals in a Friday Night game at Jerry Chabola Stadium on the campus of Culver City High School. The game matched two CIF Champions from 2018, with Division 7 Culver City against Division 5 Lawndale High.

Culver City junior quarterback Zevi Eckhaus threw for three touchdowns, completing 18 of 26 passes for 329 yards. Eckhaus also rushed for 65 yards, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter. For the season, Eckhaus has thrown for over 2,700 yards, with 37 touchdown passes and only four interceptions. There are times when he makes it look easy.

Lawndale quarterback Jalon Daniels, a Middle Tennessee State commit, had a very good game as well. Daniels rushed for 166 yards on 22 carries, scoring two touchdowns. Daniels ran behind a huge offensive led by right tackle Rolan Fullwood. The 6’5”, 305-pound Fullwood, has an offer from USC to play football, according to 24/7 Sports. Daniels also tossed a touchdown pass of 16 yards to wide receiver Jeff Trepagnier. All three of Daniels touchdowns came in the second quarter as Lawndale took a 21-12 halftime lead.

Eckhaus was the not the only star on the Culver City roster. Tanner Duve caught four passes for 91 yards and two touchdowns, and Chris Miller had six catches for 117 yards and had a clutch interception in the endzone late in the fourth quarter to preserve the five-point lead.

A string of penalties on Culver City helped Lawndale get the ball back and into a position to win at the Centaur six-yard line, but a Daniels pass to Trepagnier failed to connect, giving the Centaurs their first win over Lawndale in six years.

With the victory, the Centaurs improved to 7-0 for the season. Culver City is now ranked No.19 in Southern California by both the Los Angeles Times and Max Preps. In the state, Culver City is ranked No.31. Nationally, the Centaurs are now ranked at No. 261. Culver City is also the top-ranked team in Division 5. If the rankings mean anything, Culver City is a having a very good season to this point.

The Centaurs return to action this Friday, Oct. 18, when they travel to El Segundo to play the Eagles. The game will start at 7 p.m. The Eagles have a record of 4-3 and are always a tough opponent.
