Culver City Observer -

Bobby Bradford at Santa Monica Public Library

Los Angeles jazz legend Bobby Bradford brings his all-star band to Santa Monica for a set of original music, on Wednesday August 21, at 7:30 pm, in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium of the Main Library located at at 601 Santa Monica Blvd.

Since the 1960s Bradford has worked steadily as a leader and collaborated with artists including Ornette Coleman, John Carter, Vinny Golia, David Murray, Nels Cline, Mark Dresser, and many more.

At 85, his skill and imagination on the cornet continue to be admired by players of all ages.

His sextet represents three generations of the LA musical underground. Keyboardist Don Preston is Bradford's contemporary. In 1971, when Bradford recorded the classic LP "Science Fiction" with Ornette Coleman, Preston played on Frank Zappa's "Fillmore East - June 1971," Carla Bley's "Escalator Over the Hill," and John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Some Time in New York City."

Vinny Golia (reeds) and William Roper (tuba) came up in the 1970s-80s, and have each created major bodies of work as soloists, leaders, collaborators, and sidemen for everyone from Anthony Braxton and Horace Tapscott to Elton John and Patti Smith.

Dave Tranchina (bass) and Tina Raymond (drums) both graduated CalArts, where Golia teaches, in the 2000s, and both appear on Orenda Records, currently one of LA's hottest indie jazz labels, as leaders and accompanists, frequently as a team.

This show is part of Soundwaves, a concert series emphasizing artists who appear on the DRAM (Database of Recorded American Music) streaming service. The Santa Monica Public Library is the first public library to offer this service to its cardholders. Listings of past and upcoming Soundwaves shows as well as sound and video recordings are at SoundwavesNewMusic.com
