Hosted at the historic Wilshire Ebell Theater in Hancock Park, Stacey Abrams was the featured author/guest at an event by Writers Bloc Presents. Stacey Abrams, the former Democratic candidate for the 2018 Georgia gubernatorial election was interviewed by Jamil Smith of Rolling Stone magazine. The room was filled with supporters, mainly women, who looked toward to hearing from Ms. Abrams, this beacon of new energy in the world of politics. While the main focus was her newly released book, "Lead from the Outside," the conversation drifted to the past, starting with the early days as a university student, starting with the tension in Atlanta after the Rodney King verdict to working with the mayor of Atlanta as a voice for the youth. These events sparked her interest in politics, leading her to set her eyes on the seat of governor of Georgia. The conversation changed to the more recent events such as her involvement with the New Georgia Project, which she initially started to help Georgians sign up for the Affordable Care Act, but turned into a voting registration organization for underrepresented groups in Georgia. Abrams gave more detail toward the experience of running for governor, which lead to her seeing rampant voter suppression and resulted in her advocating for fair voting with her new organization Fair Fight Action. Her new goal is combating what was done to her and the people of Georgia and to fight for better representation as she states, "If you are not at the table, you're on the menu." She also shared that since the election was so close, there is desire for a candidate like her. When asked if she would run with Joe Biden, she hesitantly relented and stated that she had no plans of running with Biden because she would never run for second place, however, she has considered looking at the presidential election. The conversation between Abrams and Smith also switched to the more comical and personal tone, such as Abrams describing her perfect day as a day binge watching Star Trek alone. When the event was over, I didn't feel that she was trying to get my vote or my money, but more of her describing what she has learned over the years, especially in the Georgia election, and how that loss propels her forward in the area of politics and helping the underrepresented. From an outside perspective, the event elegantly transitioned from the work of Stacey Abrams to the incredible person she is on a personal level. Overall, the event was full of intrigue and life advice that can used time and time again.
