Motel Suicide Victim Identified

The Los Angeles County Coroner has publicly identified a suspect from a shooting who barricaded himself inside a Culver City motel and died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The man was Jeffrey Rivas, 52, of Venice. His death is being investigated as a suicide.

Rivas was suspected of shooting someone 5 a.m. on Flower Court west of Lincoln Boulevard, in the Venice area of Los Angeles. The victim was hospitalized and is expected to recover.

An investigation led police to a motel in the westside of Culver City, where the suspect barricaded himself inside a room.

He claimed he had a hostage and a bomb, but those threats turned out to be false. Officers heard one shot from inside the room. The SWAT made entry into the room and found the man dead in the room.
