Shooting a Homeless Encampment

Residents on the westside of Culver City and Mar Vista are growing increasingly nervous after a shooting Monday at a homeless encampment underneath the freeway bridge at the corner of Venice Blvd. and Globe Ave. While in Los Angeles the encampment is directly across the street from Culver City.

While Culver City is quick to remove tents and other structures the homeless put up, Los Angeles appears to lack the resources to deal with the growing problem.

Residents have long reported increases in crime and drug use in and around the encampments.

The shooting was captured on video and show two male Hispanics exiting a black car. One of the men brandished a gun at allegedly shoots and wounds a homeless man.

Several shootings have taken place at that location and one as recently as last July.

The encampments have popped up under freeways throughout the westside. Parents have expressed concern for their safety and the safety of their children.

The encampments have not only created safely problems but sanitary issues also. When a judge in Orange County ordered a homeless encampment along the Santa Ana River bed works who were cleaning up found 404 tons of debris, approximately 14,000 needles and 3 tons of hazardous waste including human feces.
