LAFC Clinches MLS Playoff Spot in First Season!

Black and Gold Shutout Rapids 3-0

September 27, 2018

The Los Angeles Football Club became only the fourth Major League Soccer expansion team to qualify for the playoffs in its inaugural season. The Black and Gold shutout the Colorado Rapids, 3-0, at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colorado on Saturday night, October 6.

It was the 10th shutout of the season for LAFC goalkeeper Tyler Miller. Walker Zimmerman headed in the first goal in the 15th minute. Adama "Dio" Diomande added his 10th and 11th goals of season for the final two scores: the first on an assist from Lee Nguyen in the 42nd minute, the second on assists from Aaron Kovar and Benny Feilhaber in the 48th minute.

LAFC has three games remaining before wrapping up the regular season schedule. They host the Houston Dynamo on Friday, October 12 and the Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday, October 21 at Banc of California Stadium. They finish at Sporting Kansas City on Sunday, October 28.

LAFC is currently tied for second in the Western Conference with Sporting KC, both with 15-8-8 records for 53 points. LAFC lost their only match at home with Kansas City earlier this season, 2-0. FC Dallas leads the Conference with 57 points. The top two teams in each conference automatically advance to the Semi-finals, avoiding the Knockout round featuring the third through sixth place finishers.
