Culver Fire Marshall Mike Nagy Passes at Age 52

Decorated Firefighter also was Battalion Chief in 33 years of Service

Michael "Mike" Nagy, a beloved and longtime fixture in Culver City's firefighting community, passed away on Sept. 18. He was 52.

His wife of 12 years, Susan Preletz, was at his side.

Mr. Nagy was a Battalion Chief with the Culver City Fire Department and last served as Fire Marshal. Born in Hollywood, he was a graduate of Loyola high school, a United States Air Force veteran and an alumnus of University of Redlands.

In addition to wife Susan, Mr. Nagy is survived by his sister Nina (Nagy) Galanti and her husband, Dan; nieces Catherine and Elizabeth; in-laws Dave and Carol Preletz; brother-in-law Mark Preletz; sister in-law Karen Frank, her husband Steve and daughter Emily; and his beloved dog, Sophie.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Family members and friends remember Mr. Nagy for his sense of humor, a sensitive spirit, and endless generosity. He was a respected leader for the City of Culver City.

Over his career, he served in the Air Force as a firefighter and then became a dedicated first-responder with the Culver City Fire Department. He rose through the ranks as firefighter, paramedic, engineer, captain, battalion chief and fire marshal.

He will be profoundly missed by countless family members, fellow firefighters, friends and neighbors.

"Life without him is unthinkable, and yet we will continue to honor him with the hope of one day living up to his legacy of light, humor, generosity and love," Mr. Nagy's survivors said in a written statement.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at the American Martyrs Church, 700 15th St., Manhattan Beach.

In lieu of flowers, the Nagy family suggests making a memorial gift to advance pancreatic cancer research at UCLA's Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center.
