Aaron Donald is now the standard. The Los Angeles Rams announced today that they have agreed to a six-year, $137 million contract extension. It's the richest contract ever offered to a defensive player in NFL history. $87 million is guaranteed to the 2017 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and should keep Donald with the Rams through the 2024 season.

Donald, who held out of training camp the past two seasons as leverage to signing a contract extension, finally got his just desserts after almost 20 months of back-and-forth negotiations with Rams management. Head coach Sean McVay first hinted at the inevitable signing earlier this week following months of little movement in the negotiations.

The signing means Donald will be ready for the Rams opening season game at Oakland on Monday Night Football, September 10. It also relieves the anxiety Rams fans had about Donald's absence. With all their ducks lined up in a row now the Rams are considered a serious threat to play in the Super Bowl in Atlanta, February 2019.

Donald had 11 quarterback sacks and five forced fumbles last season, helping the Rams win the NFC West Division with an 11-5 record. With the off-season signing of All-Pro defensive Ndamukong Suh to compliment Donald and defensive end Michael Brockers gives the Rams their most formidable defensive line since the era when the famed Fearsome Foursome roamed ruled the L.A. Coliseum during the 1970's.
