Details Emerge of Shooting Death in Culver

Culver City Officer Fires Fatal Shot

August 23, 2018

Law-enforcement officials have identified the knife-wielding man that was shot and killed last week in Culver City by officers as Michael Harrison, age 30.

The shooting occurred shortly before 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, in the 4100 block of Mentone Avenue. Deputy Marvin Crowder of the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department confirmed that Harrison was pronounced dead later that day at a hospital.

The bizarre incident apparently began a few blocks away from the deadly shooting. Culver Police "responded to an apartment complex on the 10400 block of Culver Boulevard," Crowder said. "The call was regarding a domestic incident between a brother and sister."

Though official details of the shooting remain sketchy, some eyewitnesses said that Harrison apparently began stabbing his sister, age 27, with a large butcher knife.

The woman, whose name has not been released, apparently then fled down an alleyway and began running down Mentone Avenue.

Officers, responding quickly, received an update regarding a man chasing a woman with a knife, Crowder said.

"Once officers arrived, they contacted the male and the male charged officers with the knife, at which time an officer-involved shooting occurred," Crowder said.

The woman suffered multiple stab wounds to her upper body inflicted by her brother and was taken to a hospital. She was expected to survive.

Following longstanding policy, neither the Culver City Police or the L.A. County Sherriff's Department would identify the officer or officers involved in the shooting.SOurce have told the Observer that it was a Culver City Police Oficer who fired the fatal shot.
