Scouts' Annual Dinner Attracts Big Crowd

Cake Scouts! Boy Scout Gordon Kalkbrenner and brother Morgan (l-r) serve cake to Culver retiree Larry Rios at Troop 113's fundraiser Saturday.

More than 150 residents of Culver City and surrounding communities turned out for local Boy Scout Troop 113's annual spaghetti dinner last Saturday at Culver High.

Guests dined on all-you-can pasta, garlic bread and fresh salad. They also had the opportunity to bid on about a dozen large gift baskets, many of them filled with items donated by local grocers and other retailers.

Many of the diners there were courtesy of Troop 113 itself, which donated several tickets to the Culver City Senior Center.

Scouts in their full-dress uniforms handled the event's set-up, cleanup, bused the tables and served the guests desserts from a rolling dessert tray. Parents handled the cooking and served the salads and hot food in the school's cafeteria kitchen.

The spaghetti dinner is the Scout's biggest fundraiser of the year. Most of the money from each $6 ticket sold by an individual Scout is put directly into his "Scout account" to help pay for campout fees and other fun events throughout the year.

Many local businesses and individual professionals charitably provided much of the food and supplies for the fundraiser. Other gave cash to help offset the Troop's out-of-pocket expenses.

Top contributors included Sorrento Italian Market, John Riordan Plumbing, Culver City Rock & Mineral Club and Santa Monica's Eugene A. Korney, CPA.

Also, Dave & Buster's, Yogurtland and the Sawtelle Boulevard branch of Menchie's Frozen Yogurt.

Troop 113, which meets on most Tuesday nights at the historic Culver City Scout House near the intersection of Culver Boulevard and Elenda Street, is also accepting new members. Applicants must between the ages of 11 and 17, or as young as 10-and-one-half if the youngster has already completed fifth grade.

More information can be found on the Troop's internet web site, http://www.bsatroop113.org.
