Culver Woman's Club Walking to Save Trees

Culver City's Woman's Club raised money for trees by organizing a lake walk at Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, Baldwin Hills.

Money donated to sponsor walkers will fund several acres of replanting trees in the California Penny Pines Reforestation program, which began in 1941.

At that time, seedlings could be purchased for a penny each, hence the name "Penny Pines"; the forest service paid for the cost of site preparation and planting, while donations paid for the seedlings to be planted.

Funds began to be used for additional reforestation costs in 1964; now they're used to prepare sites and plant seedlings after fires, as well as maintaining trees.

Seven times more forest vegetation is lost annually due to disease and insect infestation than loss due to fires.
