Local Students Become Art Docents

LACMA Art Interns

Camila Fernandez and Peri Reynaldo, students in Culver City High School's AVPA (Academy of Visual and Performing Arts), won out over 140 students to be interns at LACMA (LA County Museum of Art). Both students participated in the museum's training sessions, culminating in the student interns leading tours for young students.

Camila and Peri gave their debut docent tours on April 19, to a group of fellow CCHS art students, along with CCUSD school board members and administrators. Each intern was able to select her favorite art pieces for the tour.

Peri began: "My theme is how form and gestures in pieces create emotion and ideas. I ask you to consider every aspect of the paintings." Ellsworth Kelly's 1972 Blue Curve III oil on canvas was her first stop.

Janice Pober, Senior VP, Sony Global Corporate Social Responsibility, attended the docent tour; Sony Pictures Entertainment contributes to sponsorship.

"I support this program because I remember being a young girl and enjoying art and having questions about it," she says. "Giving these students the opportunity to look at art, learn about art, talk about art – it's magical. And they are comfortable talking to their peers, so they begin to develop leadership skills by touring their fellow students around," Pober said.

"After Dark," a free evening for teens, will be held April 28. All CCHS students are invited. The evening is for high school students only; reservations are required. Details: http://www.lacma.org/event/teen-night-high-school
