UCLA Softball Returns to the College World Series

The UCLA softball program hopes to continue its post season success this weekend at the College World Series in Oklahoma City starting with the game they played on Thursday, June 1 against Louisiana State University (LSU). Check your local listings or the Bruin website to find out when their next game will be played.

The Bruins are currently 5-0 in the post season and that includes victories over Lehigh, San Jose State and Cal State Fullerton in the Regionals and two wins over the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss) last weekend. All five wins were played at home so the Bruins are hoping to continue their winning ways at a neutral site in Oklahoma City. UCLA is 13-4 at neutral sites this year. Against Ole Miss last week the Bruins won a marathon 11 inning game on Thursday 8-7 and was victorious against the same team on Friday, 1-0.

Those two games showed what type of team UCLA has. They can beat you with timely hitting or great pitching. One through nine the Bruins have hitters who can deliver winning hits and their two pitchers, Rachel Garcia and Selina Ta'amilo can dominate a game if they are hitting their spots. "All parts of our game is hitting on all cylinders," said UCLA head coach Kelly Inouye-Perez after their closeout win over Ole Miss Friday night. "We don't rely on just one or two players. Every player in our lineup has driven in a game winning run and scored a game winning run this year and that's what makes this team so good."

The UCLA team made defensive changes at the end of March and those changes pushed the Bruins in different and more positive direction. "We started working harder in the weight room and on the field," said Madeline Jelenicki who drove in the game's only run in the 1-0 win.

All 22 girls on the team started working harder. This Bruin team, which is riding a eight-game winning streak, is playing with great confidence right now. If that's enough to win a championship, we will find out this week and next week. I told our team if you want to be a champion you have to act like a champion.
