Now that we have a new superintendent of schools, I would like to suggest year round classes, easing away from Japanese and pushing Chinese.

What’s happening with the Takata air bag recall? Six months ago the Los Angeles Times mentioned eight automakers were recalling more than 12 million vehicles in the United States to replace potentially dangerous inflators.

Southwest and Ryan Airlines are very profitable because they order the same aircraft model and their employees know every inch in their area of responsibility. As such, after Viet Jet gave Boeing an order for 100 planes worth 11 billion, I was surprised when they ordered 20 A321 aircraft from Air Bus for $2.39 billion.

Less than four months ago U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer sentenced Federico Buenrostro, Jr., the former chief executive of CalPERS, to four and one half years in prison for taking more than $200,000 in bribes. Please double check my math, because I didn’t go to Culver City High School – Hmmm, four and one half years equates, with good behavior and turning the TV off at 9 p.m., to two years and three months. Now, I’m not aware if he was locked up prior to sentencing, so that time served was a factor. So, for $200,000 the feds just might have driven him twice around the block before they took him to the Red Lobster for lunch and release.

Speaking about prison, I kind of remember calling Councilmember Paul Jacobs regarding persistent rumors that the State of California was thinking about building a prison on Jefferson on the way to Lincoln. Paul said he would be against it, Yes, Paul was on the Culver City council then.

As mentioned in the Tampa Bay Times, at least five children were given the wrong immunizations at a health clinic for the uninsured, including a two-year-old boy who got an excessive dose of a cervical cancer prevention vaccine. The “Shots for Tots” program run by Salem County, New Jersey has been shuttered while officials try to determine how and why the errors occurred.

Hard to believe it was 50 or so years ago the farm workers were striking in the grape fields of Delano, California. I remember strong union members would be marching in front of the supermarkets asking people to boycott the growers who didn’t sign contracts.

Congratulations to all you Military Order of the Purple Heart (MOPH) members who attended the 2016 National Convention last month in Norfolk, Virginia. I still remember a dear friend, Robert Mann, who received five Purple Hearts from D-Day to VE Day as a sniper with 3rd Army’s 6th armored soldiers. I understand the reunion of the Battle of the Bulge Veterans is coming up. My records indicate last year it was December 13 in West Palm Beach, Florida. Why don’t you scamper over to the Los Angeles County Library, renamed in 2000 for Congressman, Julian Dixon, and get the July – August 2016 issue of the Smithsonian? Starting on page 56 is the World War 1 Battle of the Somme where more than 72,000 Allied soldiers who died have no known grave and France does have some 280 burial grounds for men killed in Somme Combat.
