Angels Acquire Of Cameron Maybin From Detroit

The Angels have acquired OF Cameron Maybin from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for minor league RHP Victor Alcantara. Additionally, the club will exercise Maybin’s 2017 option. The announcement was made by Angels General Manager Billy Eppler.

Maybin, 29, appeared in 94 games with the Tigers last season, batting .315 (110/349) with 14 doubles, five triples, four home runs, 43 RBI and 15 stolen bases. The outfielder set new career highs in average and on-base percentage (.383) and was one of six players in the Majors to hit .315 (min. 350 PA) and steal 15 bases, along with Jose Altuve, Mookie Betts, Charlie Blackmon, Jean Segura and Mike Trout. He also posted a .380 (27/71) average with runners in scoring position in 2016, good for second in the Majors (min. 75 PA) and the sixth-best clip in Detroit’s franchise history.

Maybin was originally selected 10th overall by the Tigers in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft before making his Major League debut with Detroit in 2007. During his 10-year career the North Carolina native has compiled a .259 (706/2727) average with 114 doubles, 29 triples, 46 home runs, 252 RBI and 131 stolen bases in 796 games for the Tigers (2007 & 2016), Marlins (2008-10), Padres (2011-14) and Braves (2015).

Alcantara, 23, completed his fifth season in the Angels organization in 2016. The right-hander appeared in 29 games (20 starts) with Double-A Arkansas and went 3-7 with a 4.30 ERA (111 IP – 53 ER) with 79 strikeouts and 57 walks. The Dominican native was originally signed by the Angels as an international free agent June 10, 2011 and in 114 career minor league appearances (93 starts), Alcantara has gone 24-34 with a 4.60 ERA (503.1 IP – 257 ER) with 446 strikeouts and 250 walks.
