Culver City Loses IndieCade

September 8, 2016

According to reports in the Los Angeles Times IndieCade, the gaming industry's top festival, is leaving Culver City and moving to USC.

The move was due to the final stages of developing downtown Culver City.

The festival will move to USC's School of Cinematic Arts and be held from Oct. 13 to 16.

Richard Lemarchand, a game designer and associate professor at USC, told the Times, “IndieCade is vitally important to the vibrant Los Angeles game development scene for the community that it provides — not just for developers in L.A., but for the people from all around the world who come to our wonderful city for the festival each fall.”

In recent years the city has given in-kind financial assistance per the requests of IndieCade CEO Stephanie Barish.

Indiecade was given in-kind financial assistance from the City and, in the case where the cost of such assistance was $1000 or more, City sponsorship. Her list of requests included a request to the Successor Agency to waive the $572 rental fee for one day for Parcel B, which is used as the site for most of the festival’s features.

The loss to local businesses and restaurants is in incalculable.
