Rockets Red Glare Over Culver City

The annual Fourth of July Fireworks show will be held at West L.A. College for the first time this year

Last year, for the first time in 47 consecutive celebrations of our nation's birthday, the skies over Culver City fell dark. Construction at Culver High prevented the Exchange Club from hosting its annual fireworks show. Because construction continues at the high school, this annual local and family tradition has been moved to the football field at West Los Angeles College.

"Our fireworks show this year will be bigger and better than ever," said Xavier Nuques the Co-Chair of the event for the Exchange Club. "We know that a lot of folks were disappointed and really missed celebrating the Fourth with their friends and neighbors. Knowing that, we're working extra hard to make this the best show we've ever done!"

As in years past, the organizers encourage patrons settle in with a picnic basket and a blanket. Because the main seating area will be artificial turf, chairs with sharp edges and glass bottled beverages will be prohibited. For those folks who don't want to pack meal, there will be plenty of food vendors on hand – including local favorites like Santa Maria Barbecue, Jackson Market and Tub's Chili. Starting at 6pm, Rob Canove and Playback will entertain the crowd with their classic rock stylings. Raffle tickets featuring grand prizes such as big screen TV, an aerial tour of Los Angeles and luxury hotel stay will be on sale. All the proceeds, along with every cent raised will help prevent child abuse and goes to support local youth programs.

Even though the fireworks will start at dusk, the gates will open to the public and parking at 4pm. Because parking is limited, and to encourage carpooling to the event, the organizers have created a sliding fee scale for those driving to the show.

The stadium grandstands will be open on a first come first serve basis. So the exchange club recommends viewers come early to get a seat. The show is handicapped accessible with plenty of designated areas and parking spaces near the field. To learn more, the organizers urge you to visit the website at culvercityfireworksshow.com.

"We're excited to be back," said Nuques.
