After compiling a 1-4 record in non-league games but improving against top-notch competition the Centaurs will begin Ocean League play.

Donald Paysinger, following a long association with Beverly Hills High, became Hawthorne’s coach this season.

The Cougars have a 2-3 record. In their last game they defeated Leuzinger, 44-8.

SANTA MONICA

The defending league champion Vikings (2-3) will begin Ocean League play Friday by hosting Morningside at 7 pm at Corsair Field. Santa Monica won its first two non-league games, then lost the next three, including a 26-14 setback against Hart Friday night at Corsair Field.

Hart is ranked No. 1 in the Northern Division in the CIF poll.

Quarterback Nico Basile threw two touchdown passes to give Samohi a 14-0 lead. But Hart scored 26 consecutive points, led by quarterback Brady White.

ST. MONICA

The Mariners (2-4) lost to Carpenteria, 38-7 last weekend. They’ll play at Bellarmine-Jefferson on Saturday night.

BRENTWOOD

The Eagles (1-3) will play Viewpoint Friday at 7 pm at Calabasas High. Brentwood traveled to Big Bear and lost last weekend, 42-8.

Daniel Gerber was chosen Brentwood’s Player of the Game.

WINDWARD

The Wildcats (4-1) absorbed their first loss of the season, 32-13 to Viewpoint.

Daniel Webster was chosen Windward’s Player of the Game.

This Saturday at 7 pm Windward will oppose Kilpatrick at Palisades High.

VENICE

The Gondoliers continued their long mastery of Western League opponents, but just barely.

Venice edged Dorsey last weekend, 31-29.

The Gondoliers will host Hamilton Friday night.
