Dear Editor,

December 12, 2012

Just today I saw the headline of the Culver City Observer for December 6-12, 2012; “Grizzly Suicide on West Washington” and thought that article looked interesting. I expected to read further and see something like this:

Upon hearing of the demise of one of Culver City’s denizens, the Observer immediately dispatched one of its seasoned reporters to elaborate upon the circumstances. Our reporter learned from a neighbor that the bear had been feeling despondent lately. “He was feeling lonely and unhappy that no one of his species had been seen anywhere in the area for more than 150 years. I think that’s an awfully long time to go without companionship, if you know what I mean,” said a neighbor who wished to remain anonymous.

It is unclear just what the living arrangements of the deceased were. “I have heard of black bears 30 or 40 miles away in the mountains, but this is the first I heard of a grizzly in the neighborhood,” said another neighbor, who also wished to remain anonymous.

But I then read a little further, and found that the Observer meant grisly. That was sad. Darn those spell checkers.
