Body Found at Culver City Expo Station Identified

November 7, 2012

Shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday morning the Los Angeles City Fire Department responded to reports of a body on the tracks on an elevated section of Expo Line tracks at the Culver City Station. The Los Angeles County Coroner has identified the man Bernard Bettis, a 48 year old resident of Long Beach. Bettis was declared dead at the scene by the firefighters.

While it is the first reported fatality on the Expo Line the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department Transit Bureau released a statement saying the death was not caused by a train or electrocution.

The Culver City station is currently the end of the line while construction continues on the second phase to Santa Monica. Trains slow upon approach to the station as they maneuver to different tracks for their return to downtown Los Angeles.

"He may have fallen from the platform area, onto the tracks. It's still under investigation,'' commented Metro spokesperson Rick Jager.

The tracks run about three feet below the platform

Train service, which runs until 2 a.m. on weekends, was not interrupted due to the incident. The Coroner’s office said an autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death.
