A just reward for all of her hard work: Culver City Rock & Mineral club member Sue Acosta won the raffle grand prize of $100 at the club’s recent “Fiesta of Gems,” and the consensus is that if anyone deserves it, Sue does! The upcoming Fiesta LaBallona weekend marks a busy time for these rockhounds – they’ll be sharing a booth with the Culver City Scout House (where they’re Workshop is based) and the club BBQ will take place on Saturday, August 28 at Carlson Park. The BBQ runs from 10 a,.m. to 4 p.m., so members, friends and families can eat, play games, enjoy a silent auction, and shuttle back and forth from the potluck to the Fiesta at Vet’s Park. As President Rick Shaffer says of the potluck, “It may not be gourmet, but it’s fun!” For more information on the club’s activities, visit www.culvercityrocks.org.

From C.E.R.T. (Community Emergency Response Team) radio operator chief Bob Pine comes the reminder to members that the next CCARES ham radio test is on Saturday, August 21 at 8:50 a.m. at the Culver City Fire Department Drill Yard on Jefferson Boulevard. The more radio operators there are in CERT, the more effective they will be during a disaster. The cost for the exam will be $4.00, cash only, plus bring along a government issued photo ID. If you have any questions, ask Bob at K6RMP@ca.rr.com. Bob advises that, following the exam, there will always be members who will be glad to help with buying a radio and learning how to operate it.
