A new non-profit “Friends of the Culver City Scout House” organization has been launched designed to preserve, maintain and operate the Culver City Scout House for the benefit of youth groups and other community organizations. The well-used building has served as a meeting place for numerous scouting organizations since the early 1940s and was moved to its current location, 10866 Culver Blvd., around 1950. The Culver City Scout House, currently home to Boy Scout Troop 113, along with an annex used as the Culver City Rock & Mineral Club’s workshop, is in need of some long-term repairs. The property is currently operated under an existing lease with the City of Culver City, and the FOCCSH has been formed to provide funding for these much-needed repairs and secure a new lease. If you see them touring around town, be sure to say “Hi!” – A delegation of students from Culver City’s Sister City of Iksan City, Korea will be visiting Culver City for seven days beginning July 17. The four participants are all high schoolers and are being hosted by Culver City families with children about the same age. Everyone in town is invited to attend a welcome party at Culver City's Blair Hills Park (5950 Wrightwood Drive) on Saturday, July 17 from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm as well as a farewell party at Lindberg Park (5041 Rhoda Way) on Thursday, July 22 from noon to 4:00 pm. In the intervening days they’ll be given a whirlwind tour of not just Culver City, but we’re betting Disneyland and other sites are sure to be on the agenda as well. The Culver City Sister City Committee also has sister cities in Mexico, Japan and Canada, dedicated to fostering international and intercultural friendships and understanding.
From the Culver City Garden Club comes reminders of two nearby events Culcitizens might be interested in: The 51st Annual Westchester Begonia Society Show & Sale,” set for Saturday, July 17 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 6323 W. 80th St. (at Sepulveda Blvd.); and the Heal the Bay “Monthly Beach Clean-Up,” Saturday, July 17 from 10:00 a.m. until noon at Venice Beach & Rose Ave., Venice.
There are still a few spots available for surfer dudes and dudettes at the Culver-Palms Family YMCA’s Summer Surf Camps, for both weekday and Saturday sessions. How about taking the family to a rollicking musical, “The Wind in the Willows,” based on the 1903 children’s classic by Kenneth Grahame? And the best part: performances are free, but any donations that might be offered will go to help support Grace Lutheran Church’s Grace Performing Arts Ministry. “Willows” opening night is at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16 with performances at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 17 and Sunday, July 18 at the church, located at 4427 Overland Avenue, Culver City. The Culver City Emblem Club will be hosting another great Parking Lot Sale this Sunday, July 18 from 9:00 1.m. – 3:00 p.m. If it’s anything like their other sales, there will be lots of books, dishes, clothes, CDs, “odds and ends” and – who knows? -- maybe even a priceless treasure or two! The site will be the Culver City Elks Lodge parking lot, 11160 Washington Place in Culver City.
Dixieland jazz? Santa Maria Barbecue? You’ll get plenty of both on Wednesday, July 21, 2010 starting at 5:30 p.m. when the Culver City Historical Society hosts its Annual Picnic. The cost is $25 per person, and reservations are required, but if paid for by July 16 (that’s tomorrow) the price is just $20.00 per person.
