Expect Knock On Door Saturday

September 24, 2009

Déjà vu all over again – Culver City Lion Jack Barton showed up at last week’s luncheon meeting with yet “… another body part encased in surgical wrap, setting off another health and welfare program. This time it was his left hand which he stabbed trying to put away a knife.” (There’s a lesson here: don’t get too close to Jack when he has any kind of utensil in his hand…) The Culver City Lions Club meets weekly at 12:15p.m. @ Sizzler restaurant across from the shiny new Westfield mall on Sepulveda.

If you’re an active voter, expect a knock on your door this Saturday from one of the many folks committed to the passage Measure EE (an $8 per month parcel tax on the November 3 ballot dedicated to Culver City schools). It’s estimated that if 100 volunteers start the afternoon off at 12:30 at Vets Park for a quick photo op, training, and then divvying up to assigned neighborhoods to get the word out it will be a two-hour commitment. Everyone’s then invited over to the Scott Zeidman home at 4 for a barbecue and debriefing. To participate, (you can bring friends, kids, and neighbors) contact Scott via email at Scott.Zeidman@LASlots.com, or phone (310) 925-8207.

We’re smack in the middle of the community-wide “Activate America” week, with the Culver-Palms Family YMCA hosting an Open House every day that will conclude with a Health Expo this Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This evening (Thursday) drop in at the branch, 4500 So. Sepulveda Blvd., at 6:30 p.m. For a free Perfect Portions program, presented by dietitian Jan Lerner DeFeo, MS, RD. Cryptic reminder in the Culver City Rotary Club’s Reciprocator newsletter last week, to wit: “September 30th – Spouse’s Night – Think Greek. “ We’re sure to hear more about this later…

Here’s an opportunity to toast the great people-to-people programs of the Culver City Sister City Committee: on Sunday, October 4 from 3 p.m. to 6. The community is invited to enjoy a variety of wines paired with tempting specialties prepared by Gyenari Restaurant. – with the proceeds going to promote our city’s international friendship programs with sister cities Kaizuka, Japan; Iri City, South Korea; Lethbridge, Ontario, Canada; and Uruapan, Mexico. The cost is $50 per person, and the lovely Gyenari, 9540 Washington Blvd., is the setting. There will also be silent auction and raffle opportunities to add to the fun.
