  • Rams' Woes Continue

    Fred Altieri|Nov 3, 2016

Four consecutive losses and counting. The now 3-5 Los Angeles Rams have reached the halfway mark in the 2016 NFL regular season in a serious funk as they lost to the Carolina Panthers, 13-10, on Sunday, November 5. One can safely say that "the entertainment capitol of the world" was not impressed with either team's offensive performance. The game also marked the unofficial awakening of the boo birds for the first time at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum since the team relocated from St. Louis...

  • Tax Hikes, Charter Changes Greet Voters in Culver City

    Stephen Hadland|Nov 3, 2016

If you can get past the Presidential Election and the 17 statewide propositions on the ballot, Culver City faces several important decisions in Tuesday's election. First and most importantly is the measure called the Culver City Safe/Clean Water Protection Measure (CW). According to the ballot argument it is meant to protect public health/groundwater supplies and prevent toxins and pollutants from contaminating local waterways, creeks and beaches, by improving storm drains/infrastructure to...

  • CHICAGO CUBS: 2016 WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS

    Mitch Chortkoff|Nov 3, 2016

There’s a big difference between having a good team and going all out to have a championship-caliber team. The 2016 World Series champion Chicago Cubs illustrate that point remarkably well. The Cubs hadn’t won a World Series in 108 years but accomplishing what seemed impossible became the goal that surfaced in 2009 when the Ricketts family bought the team for $845 million and Tom Ricketts began running the show. You may be familiar with the Ricketts family. They’re heavily involved in polit...

  • CLEVELAND INDIANS: 2016 WORLD SERIES RUNNNERUP

    Mitch Chortkoff|Nov 3, 2016

In a great World Series someone has to lose. This year it was the Cleveland Indians but they should be proud of their performance in a classic series that wasn’t decided until the extra inning of the seventh game. Terry Francona is a manager who is probably headed to the Hall of Fame. He guided the Boston Red Sox to two World Series championships and came close this time. His work this season was superb. The Indians lost some key players early in the season including two important pitchers. F...

  • Election Burnout? How To Recover

    Carole Bell|Nov 3, 2016

I'm sick of the election and don't want to write about it anymore. So today I'm writing about compassion, which we will all need regardless of what happens next Tuesday. Five decisive days to go, how will we get through it? 50% of Americans will be unhappy with whoever wins the most caustic election we’ve had. Unhappiness, anger, and the fears that drive us; this is what will surround us next week. How to cope? You do know that a year from now, say two, to be safe, it’s likely we’ll worry about...

  • It Will Be A Long, Long Complex Election Day

    Neil Rubenstein|Nov 3, 2016

This election on November 8 will be so long, what with federal offices, judges, propositions, bonds and taxes, and the “facts” mailed by the pro and anti camps, you just have to wonder how many mail carriers will get hernias and go on state disability. Over the past few months I have made Theodorsia’s and my recommendations regarding judges and the city hall power grab of placing the police and fire chiefs under the city manager. To the people at city hall who want to grab power in that manne...

  • Dear Editor

    Letters|Nov 3, 2016

Dear Editor. For your reading edification or disdain, the following will be my votes on the 17 propositions on this year’s California ballot. Prop 51 – Yes: Authorizes $9 billion in bonds for construction and modernization of K-12 schools, charter schools and community colleges. Education is the base on which we build our future, it deserves our funding. Prop 52 – Yes: The Medi-Cal Hospital fee is a current, successful program that saves California money and funds hospitals. It expires in 2018 a...

The Bruins are now 18-4 and 9-3 in the Pac-12 which is good enough to tie Washington for the best record in the conference. Fred Altieri|Nov 3, 2016

Senior Night 2016 at Jerry Chabola Stadium started off with a bang as the Culver City High football team rolled over visiting Santa Monica High, 56-20 on a clear and cool Friday evening, October 28. Appropriately, the Centaur seniors played a prominent role in the fourth consecutive victory over their Ocean League archrival. "Overall I'm pleased on how we played as a team. I thought our offense was clicking on all cylinders. The defense did a good job causing turnovers and played one of their be...

  • Highest Community Debt Ever Looming

    Letters|Nov 3, 2016

Dear Editor, I’m wondering if the city made the school district aware of the looming cost of the Clean Water Act when school board members were deciding how much bond money to ask from the community. In discussing how much bond money, local board members failed to heed the voices of the fiscal conservatives in the community, such as myself, not to spend our community deeper in debt beyond what we could afford or was absolutely necessary. Board members decided on asking for $106M including 12 i...

  • Let's keep our Police Chief and Fire Chief more directly accountable to the people

    Letters|Nov 3, 2016

Let's keep our Police Chief and Fire Chief more directly accountable to the people by keeping them directly responsible to the City Council, rather than transferring this power to a City Manager. 1. True democracy holds elected officials responsible for major decisions. Ten years ago the Culver City Charter Committee (comprised of residents from a cross-section of the political spectrum) spent almost a year assessing what form of governance best suits the needs of the people in Culver City. The...

  • Former Mayor's Endorse Charter Change

    Letters|Nov 3, 2016

As former Mayors of Culver City we urge Culver City voters to join us in supporting Measure CA on the November 8 ballot In 2006 the voters approved changing our City Charter and our system of governance to a Council-Manager form of government, in which the Council hires, supervises and fires a professional full-time City Manager to run the affairs of the City. The City Manager, in turn, hires, supervises and disciplines the department heads. The part-time City Council focuses on policy matters...

  • MOVIE REVIEW: AMERICAN PASTORAL

    debbie lynn elias|Nov 3, 2016

It has long been a running banter between myself and Ewan McGregor as to when he would move from in front of the camera to behind the lens. His response has consistently been, "When I find the right project." Well, the "right project" finally came along with the adaptation of Philip Roth's Pulitzer Prize-winning AMERICAN PASTORAL. Often described as a complex and challenging work, and rightly so, this 1997 Roth work is perhaps the hallmark of his prolific career. And while many of Roth's works...

  • MOVIE REVIEW: SULLY

    Debbie Lynn Elias|Nov 3, 2016
    1

Nice to know that should Clint Eastwood choose to continue directing, he has a future career with Lifetime movies as that is exactly what his latest big screen foray with SULLY is. That's not to say there's anything wrong with Lifetime movies. I have watched more than my fair share over the years as I am sure many of you have. While solid workmanship, there's a reason those films are "made for tv" and that's exactly where SULLY belongs; on tv and not on the big screen. We all know the story of...
