Centaurs Ready for Sparkling Season

August 9, 2018

Culver City high school's football coach, Jamal Wright, is understandably excited about the new season that begins later this month after his team sparkled in summer tournaments.

"We’re excited about the ’18 team, and we’ve got a good mix of returners who have improved and newcomers who are hungry to improve themselves," Wright said.

For the first time in recent history, the Centaurs won two passing tournaments this summer, went to the finals in the prestigious “Bonita Air Assault,” and performed very well in the last and most prestigious tourney in which they almost beat national champs Mater Dei.

“We have a lot of returning starters and lettermen who are offensive linemen," Wright said. "Collectively, this could be our best group in some time.”

The focus this season will be to enhance the aggressiveness, quickness, and the ability of the linemen to get downfield to continue blocking, Wright said.

The most heralded returner will be senior All-CIF tackle Amir Hodge, who stands at six-foot four and weighs 255 pounds.

"Because of Amir’s work ethic he has become one of the best [offensive linemen] in the Ocean League," Wright said. "We look forward to Amir being the leader and the anchor of the line.”

The Centaur who has garnered among the most looks from Division-1 coaches has been right tackle Kofi Karikari, six-five and 280 pounds. “With his junior year being his first time ever playing football, he improved by leaps and bounds,” Wright said.

The receiver position is loaded with talent and has lots of depth. Leading the way is senior Jamal Glaspie, who recently committed to attend Fresno State after he graduates from Culver High.
