Ralph Bencangey, a prominent attorney and longtime Culver City resident, passed away peacefully at his home after a long battle with kidney cancer. He was 77.

Born in Salem, Mass., to Sephardic immigrants, his parents moved the family to California in 1946. Mr. Bencangey began practicing law in 1969. In 1972, he opened his Beverly Hills office where he practiced both criminal and personal-injury law over a successful 48-year career.

He relocated his growing family to Culver City in 1980. He loved cycling, westerns, football, fountain pens and his wife and kids. His survivors said he had a gift for telling stories, making people laugh and giving out nicknames.

Mr. Bencangey is survived by his wife Lupe Bencangey, who he nicknamed "Little Bear"; daughters Rosemarie and Jennifer Bencangey and Judith Rubin; son-in-law Jonathan Rubin; his son, Bob, and daughter-in-law Teresa Noonan.

He also leaves behind grandchildren Noa, Naomi and Aaron Rubin, as well as granddaughter Lena Jefferis.
